Introducing Liberty Mata

Introduction

Hi everyone! My name is Liberty Mata and I'm a sophomore English and Human Communications double major at TU.

Interests

One of my favorite hobbies is playing chess! I used to play a lot of tournaments in high school, but now I mostly play for fun. Last semester, I was given the amazing opportunity to found the Trinity Women's Chess Initiative here on campus. Since, historically speaking, only 11% of chess players are women, I wanted to help mediate an especially gender-inclusive and non-competitive space for people of all identities to explore their interest in chess! I’m also on the Trinity Cheer team so you can spot me hyping up the crowds at most football and basketball games! In my free time away from chess and cheerleading, I love to study with friends, play cozy video games like Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley, and explore museums around San Antonio.

(TU Cheer Media Day)                                                      (Chess tournament in my hometown, DFW)

(Study date with friends!)

Expectations

I like keeping an open mind with all of my classes, so I don’t have very specific expectations for Intro to Making. Still, I’m excited to brainstorm designs and be able to see my creations become a reality! I’m also looking forward to gaining experience working with the machines in the MakerSpace! I think it will be a helpful life skill to become more comfortable working with my hands and improving my proficiency with general hardware tools, woodworking, and machinery. I’m also a pretty artistic and creative person, so I’d love to be able to use these new skills if I find inspiration for any expressive endeavors like sculpture or multimedia collages.

(A sculpture I saw at SAMA. I would love to make something like this someday!)
