Luka Marko Pravica Project 3: 3D printer
Process:
I have found the process of 3D printing difficult and unintuitive. The actual sculpting was fine for the most part. I found myself typically being able to translate ideas from my mind to the software fine for the most part(I was actually very proud of my first few drafts) However, The issue is every single time the form I had created was unable to be processed and I was unable to "finish form". This resulted in me having to restart the process. The first time I had dumped a significant amount of time into my draft but during a step is randomly became extremely angular and I was no longer able to see the errors in my sculpt. The second time I was able to avoid the random topology switch of my model, however the form was still unable to convert. After trying one more time with the tank design I was unable to get it to finish form. This resulted in me trying a new design. I wanted to make a simple dinosaur that could easily print. I got really far in one of my models but then fusion crashed on me and I accidentally deleted the data this resulted in me having to start the design again. Because it was so late and I just needed to get the project done, I decided to go with a really simple model, one that included just a head tail and simple legs. This design however, printed incorrectly twice. The first time, the head did not print out the second time the z axis had an issue and couldn't start. I decided to go with an even simpler design this design finally printed correctly.
Result:
I am deeply unsatisfied with the final result. This is because all of my previous designs had more unique, complex, and aesthetically pleasing designs. The model I created was uncreative and not very interesting to look at in fact its body does not deviate much from the original box
. This was of course not intentional and the result of me not being able to print any of the designs I created prior. The result shows me that I still have much to learn when it comes to modeling and I will have to practice editing form with more projects in the future.

Reflection:
I have never struggled with any of our other projects as much as I have with this one. I began working on this project on Saturday march 2nd and have worked on it daily til today Sunday March 10th. Almost every design I could model could either not finish form or could not be printed. There was clearly something I fundamentally misunderstood about this process and will have to work to get better. Despite my frequent frustration with the process, I still believe using the edit form tool could have unique advantages when modeling design parts. In my opinion, If a builder was trying to model an irregular curved surface it would be much more beneficial to model using the edit form tool. Because of this, I believe it is beneficial for students of making to learn to edit through form. Personally, I learned the limits of the 3D printing technology the hard way. I learned you can not have an overlapping form or gaps and holes in your form. Many times when attempting to contract my tank I created bizarre contours that could not be finished. I learned the best way to go about it is to frequently finish form to check if the model is valid. Another thing Ive learned is to not make contours in the z axis too complicated without having a solid base. I believe this is what stopped me from being able to print my dinosaur design multiples times.Having, learned this from sculpt skill severely excites me. This is because there are many little bits I've wanted to make for the stop motion films I use to make when I was a kid(tanks, cars, planes, city buildings.). I now have the ability to do this and hope to 3D print somethings during the summer.
