Nate Goodwin: Proposal: Mixed Techniques

I plan to make a scene for a project I'm a part of. This would be mainly two wooden cutouts of characters in poses I would then use to create a "collage" with them for the art piece. I would use the CNC to cut out the pieces then laser cutter the pieces to add more detail. The two main references I'm using are these two images listed below.

This bottom piece is similar to what I plan to do for the background, I want a semi-roller rink appearance.

I've discussed this project with Dr. Terrell about how this would come together. I talked with him about the size of wood that I would need, as I planned to potentially use a thinner piece of wood for the CNC. I also talked about how I could create the design and mix the elements of the CNC and Laser cutter, and how I would connect the two. There were talks of creating two separate wood pieces and then gluing them, or just laser cutting the piece that was CNC'd.

The pieces of wood I'm thinking of using, the one on the left is 3/4 inch, which was reccomended. I think this might be a bit too thick for the design I'm going for.

Sketch I made in MS Paint for a general Ghostface pose. We're still working on an official design for Knuckles, so I'm working out the details on that, but I would also create one more similar sized sketch.

The biggest thing my project entails is creating the patterns in either Fusion or Adobe Illustrator. That's where the time sink is going to be, having to create such an intricate pattern. I want to have both of the sketches done within 2 weeks hopefully, that leaves me a week to test and cut the pieces. It also gives me some leeway in case I have errors/mistakes.

In terms of the materials I need, I'm going to need a sheet of wood that's big enough for the designs to fit. These might be bigger than I originally intended, so I need a piece of wood that fits my criteria. I then need the CNC machine and laser cutter, but other than those pieces (and potentially one more thinner piece of wood for the laser cutter if I do plan to glue the details) I should be good materialwise.
