Scott Wald Proposal: Mixed Techniques
Proposal Statement
I plan to make a desktop pencil/stickynote holder similar to project 2, but this time I want to add more features such as drawers and I want to use the acrylic plastic material as well. As a base I want to CNC a nice piece of wood for it to stand on. Additionally, I want to try and laser engrave some cool baroque designs into the faces of the piece.
Advise
I talked to Ryan when I was still coming up with ideas for the project because I was unsure of what to make for some time. Coming into the class many of the things I wanted to make required a wood lathe, and even though the Makerspace is packed machines that is the one thing for me that is missing. Because of this we talked about alternative projects I could possibly do like table tops and fraternity paddles, but I decided to go with making a wooden side table. This seemed fine at first and I was looking it buying some drawer sliders, but then I realized that I have perfectly good side tables at home. But then I remembered how my roommate Carter, who used to be in this class, made a pretty cool acrylic desktop sticky note drawer. Since I do not have one of these and I want to use the laser cutter without wood, I decided that this would be the perfect project to go above and beyond in Fusion and on the laser cutter.
Rough Game Plan
My plan is to continue drawing up designs. After this I need to pick out the specific pieces of acrylic plastic I want to use. Then I will craft the design in fusion, export, print, and assemble. This seems relatively straight forward but I may need to rebuild this. Finally I need to but together a nice wooden base with the CNC for the sticky note holder to sit on. These designs will feature blockers so that drawers do not fall out, multiple drawers, pencil/pen holders, a tray for mechanic pencil led, a tray for an eraser, and baroque designs laser engraved on the surfaced.
Needs
For this project I will likely just use a piece of plywood from the storage area as well as clear and other colored acrylic to add more character to the piece. But I think using mostly clear acrylic material is ideal in order to actually see what materials are inside. Also, laser engravings come out very nicely on clear acrylic. Additionally I will need to use glue that works for this, but I am sure there is already some in the makerspace that works with acrylic and acrylic on wood contact.
