Liberty Mata Proposal: Mixed Techniques

Image
Proposal Statement I plan to make a detailed wooden chess board using the CNC and Laser cutter. It will be made in two parts, the base and squares, decorated separately and then assembled. I will then use the 3D printer for pieces and then paint them. Inspo pics Advise I'm expecting to ask my friends in Engineering and the MakerSpace for advice like usual (i.e. John and Meyer). Rough Game Plan I plan to make the base of the chess board using the CNC. To decorate it, I will engrave patterns onto the edge of the board then stain the material. I will make the squares of the board using the laser cutter. I will then paint them and glue them onto the base. I will use the 3D printer to create custom chess pieces, and then paint them to differentiate each player’s pieces. CNC Base Board Design Needs I will need a decently sized piece of wood (about ¾” thick) to create the base of the board, this material will be cut using the CNC and then laser engraved. Next I will need thin plywood for ...

Proposal Statement I plan to make a desktop pencil/stickynote holder similar to project 2, but this time I want to add more features such as drawers and I want to use the acrylic plastic material as well. As a base I want to CNC a nice piece of wood for it to stand on. Additionally, I want to try and laser engrave some cool baroque designs into the faces of the piece.  Advise I talked to Ryan when I was still coming up with ideas for the project because I was unsure of what to make for some time. Coming into the class many of the things I wanted to make required a wood lathe, and even though the Makerspace is packed machines that is the one thing for me that is missing. Because of this we talked about alternative projects I could possibly do like table tops and fraternity paddles, but I decided to go with making a wooden side table. This seemed fine at first and I was looking it buying some drawer sliders, but then I realized that I have perfectly good side tables at home. Bu...

I plan to make a scene for a project I'm a part of. This would be mainly two wooden cutouts of characters in poses I would then use to create a "collage" with them for the art piece. I would use the CNC to cut out the pieces then laser cutter the pieces to add more detail. The two main references I'm using are these two images listed below. This bottom piece is similar to what I plan to do for the background, I want a semi-roller rink appearance. I've discussed this project with Dr. Terrell about how this would come together. I talked with him about the size of wood that I would need, as I planned to potentially use a thinner piece of wood for the CNC. I also talked about how I could create the design and mix the elements of the CNC and Laser cutter, and how I would connect the two. There were talks of creating two separate wood pieces and then gluing them, or just laser cutting the piece that was CNC'd. The pieces of wood I'm thinking of using, the one o...

Process: At the start, I created an STL file of the Island that I wanted to create. A lot of problems rose once I put the file into Fusion because of the amount of triangles that the file contained. This made fusion very slow and it crashed frequently during the creation process. The process involved getting rid of smaller islands next to Orcas island. I did this by creating abstract shaped sketches to extrude and get rid of unwanted parts. Then I created a Rectangular sketch around the island and extruded it up and down to make the plaque. After this, creating the adaptive drill paths initially took a long time to load because of the letters, but after realizing that the letters would not be possible to cut on the CNC, I decided to just take them off and I will have to laser engrave at a later time. Overall, the CNC took about an hour and a half to cut the plaque out.  Result: One solution Ryan introduced to me to help with the computer being overloaded with the large STL fi...

Process When I started my design, I had to brainstorm a lot to decide what topographical area I was most interested in using. I liked the idea of using a very specific part of Trinity's campus, but the land area ended up being too small to create a good result. Then, I started trying to search the map for cool mountains and unique terrain to use, but I didn't feel much inspiration towards them. Finally, I decided it would be fun to design a heart (a motif commonly found in my designs) with the topographic detailing of Berlin on the top since I'm going to study abroad there this summer! This heart can serve as a keychain and a sentimental representation of my excitement to go abroad. I imported the mesh design to Fusion 360 to design it and printed it out using the desktop CNC machine.  Second design draft Final design Result This design process felt pretty mediocre for me since I wasn't struck with amazing inspiration and the actual CNC machine process doesn't stand...

Procedure To start the I first learned how to upload .STL files and create the topographic cardholder with the tutorials. They helped me learn how to work with the Xcarve tools and  figure out how to use the extrude tool as a carving feature. I then moved to Adobe Illustrator to create the outline for the model I wanted to create, a charm design from Hollow Knight. I created this design then ported the file as a .SVG file to illustrator. I then extruded the main part of the body to the mark and the "grooves" to a lower amount until the file came out like this. I then created pathways for the drill bits to follow and sent my design to the CNC machine. After drilling my wood down to the board, it started drilling the design immediately after. I then sanded down my piece until it was clean. Results I'm happy with the results of my charm! I might paint it later to add color, but the design was very clean (albeit a bit larger than what I originally intended). The grooves are ...

Process:  I have found the process of 3D printing difficult and unintuitive. The actual sculpting was fine for the most part. I found myself typically being able to translate ideas from my mind to the software fine for the most part(I was actually very proud of my first few drafts) However, The issue is every single time the form I had created was unable to be processed and I was unable to "finish form". This resulted in me having to restart the process. The first time I had dumped a significant amount of time into my draft  but during a step is randomly became extremely angular and I was no longer able to see the errors in my sculpt. The second time I was able to avoid the random topology switch of my model, however the form was still unable to convert. After trying one more time with the tank design I was unable to get it to finish form. This resulted in me trying a new design. I wanted to make a simple dinosaur that could easily print. I got really far in one of my mod...
